Characteristics


Aluminium alloy 6082 is a medium strength alloy with excellent corrosion resistance. It has the highest strength of the 6000 series alloys. Alloy 6082 is known as a structural alloy. In plate form, Aluminium alloy 6082 is the alloy most commonly used for machining. As a relatively new alloy, the higher strength of Aluminium alloy 6082 has seen it replace 6061 in many applications. The addition of a large amount of manganese controls the grain structure which in turn results in a stronger alloy. In the T6 and T651 temper, Aluminium alloy 6082 machines well and produce tight coils of swarf when chip breakers are used.

3003-H14 is most widely used of aluminum alloys, pure aluminum with manganese added for strength, approx 20% stronger than the 1000 series alloys. 3003-H14 aluminum sheet has great workability and may be deep drawn, spun, welded or brazed. 3003 aluminum sheet is NON-heat treatable. This aluminum sheet is widely used for general purposes.

Weldability

When welding 5083 to itself or another alloy from the same sub-group, the recommended filler metal is 5183. Other suitable fillers are 5356 and 5556.

Weldability

    O, H112, H32; to spec ASTM B209, and extrusion shapes in various tempers and specifications. This is an excellent marine environment corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, commonly used in Europe and Asia but becoming more frequently used in North America. It is primarily an alloy used for its corrosion resistant properties as it is especially good on inter granular corrosion resistance. Also, the tensile and yield strength is higher than 5086 alloy, so often these properties too are used by designers for their aluminum vessels. This alloy also has good welding capabilities for fabricating vessels. 5083 is also in inventory as H32 temper which is a good standard engineering alloy, but it does not have the corrosion resistance of the other special marine tempers.
  • 5086 Aluminium Alloy – Supplied in marine grade tempers H116, H321; to spec ASTM B928. Tempers O, H112, H32; to spec
    ASTM B209, and extrusion shapes in various tempers and specifications.
    This is an excellent marine environment corrosion resistant aluminum alloy, most commonly used in North America. It is also a marine grade alloy used for its corrosion resistant properties as it is also very good on inter granular corrosion. The benefits this alloy brings over standard alloys such as 5052 or 6061 is the corrosion resistance and better welding capabilities and good forming properties. 5086 is also in inventory as H32 temper which is a good standard engineering alloy, but it does not have the corrosion resistance of the other special marine tempers.
  • 5456 Aluminium Alloy – This alloy is primarily used in areas where high strength and better welding parameters are required in
    a marine vessel or other engineering applications. Alloy 5456 is stocked in tempers H116, H321; to spec ASTM B928. Tempers O, H112, H32; to spec ASTM B209 this alloy has higher tensile strength than other marine alloys such as 5083 or 5086, and good corrosion resistance in a sea water environment, but not always the formability and corrosion performance of some of the other alloys.
  • 5454 Aluminium Alloy – This alloy is primarily used in areas where good formability is required, it is used in O, H112, H32, H34;
    to specification ASTM B209 Tempers and is an excellent choice for large pressure vessels and certain marine fabricated products. The formability is at its best in the soft 0 temper, but also sometimes used in H32 or H34 tempers too. However the strength and corrosion resistance are not always as good as other alloys, so as always a marine structural engineer should be consulted for each application.
  • 5052 H32 – Sheet & plate – A common alloy with good strength and weldability and it is easy to form and fabricate. However, not always considered a true marine alloy.
  • 6061 T6 Sheet & plate – A heat treated alloy with higher strength used in many general engineering applications.However, again not considered a true marine alloy.

Alloy 2024 plate products are used in fuselage structurals, wing tension members, shear webs and ribs and structural areas where stiffness, fatigue performance and good strength are required. Description
Alloy 2024 was introduced by Swagat steel and alloys in 1985 as an alclad sheet in the T3 temper. It was the first Al-Cu-Mg alloy to have a yield strength approaching 50,000-psi and generally replaced 2017-T4 (Duralumin) as the predominant 2XXX series aircraft alloy. With its relatively good fatigue resistance, especially in thick plate forms, aluminum alloy 2024 continues to be specified for many aerospace structural applications. 2024 varient alloys, such as higher purity 2124 and 2324, with improvements in strength and other specific characteristics, have also found application in critical aircraft structures. An improved sheet alloy for fuselage applications was introduced in 1991. Alclad C188 offers
improved fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth while maintaining the strength characteristics of 2024.

Aluminium Alloy 2024 is available in bare and alclad sheet and plate product forms in the annealed state and several tempers of T3, T4, and T8 types

Aluminum Alloy 5083

Aluminum Alloy 5083 contains 5.2% magnesium, 0.1% manganese and 0.1% chromium. In the tempered condition, it is strong, and retains good formability due to excellent ductility. 5083 has high resistance to corrosion, and is used in marine applications. It has the low density and excellent thermal conductivity common to all Aluminum alloys.

Typical Applications:

  • Require a weldable alloy of high to moderate strength, with good corrosion resistance. Marine applications, unfired welded pressure vessels, TV towers, drilling rigs, transportation equipment, armour plate.

Description:


  • Aluminum 5083 is a strong magnesium-manganese-chromium-Aluminum alloy. It can be hardened by cold work, but is not heat treatable to higher strength. It has good ductility for the strength level, better than most other 5000 series alloys (see figure).

Corrosion Resistance:


  • Alloy 5083 has excellent resistance to general corrosion, and is used in marine applications. Resistance is excellent in aqueous solutions in the pH range 4 – 9. The corrosion resistance of Aluminum alloys relies on a protective surface oxide film, which when damaged is readily repaired by the rapid reaction between Aluminum and oxygen. However, the high reactivity of the base metal can give rapid corrosion if the film cannot be repaired, so Aluminum alloys are not suitable for use with reducing media. Alloy 5083 can be anodised to improve the corrosion resistance by thickening the protective surface film. Alloy 5083 can be susceptible to exfoliation corrosion in severe applications. Material in the H116 temper is least susceptible, and passes the ASTM G66 Exfoliation Susceptibility Test (ASSET Test). AS 1734 suggests alloy 5083 should not be used above 65°C.

Pressure Vessels:

  • AS1210 Pressure Vessels pre-qualifies alloy 5083 for pressure service for temperatures up to 65°C in the O, H112 & H321 tempers.
